Drivers have been using metal mesh to block a pedestrian signal in East London, in a bid to “save money” and “avoid traffic delays”.

People have been using metal bars as barriers to cross the road since the barriers started being put up at Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow city centre.

A pedestrian movement organisation said the practice was “bizarre and bizarre”.

Westminster City Council said it was looking into the barriers.

Each pole – except one where the transmitter was installed – has been covered with a fence, preventing cars from driving into it.

Strathclyde Police said it had no complaints about the barriers.
