The Daily Beast broke the news late on Thursday that Mayor John Tory will not seek reelection. Much of the information is based on a newspaper interview with Tory, but it still doesn’t offer any clear details about the mayor’s plans.
Even before the announcement, things looked grim for the mayor. His approval rating had slipped to under 40 percent in many polls, and he had little political support left outside of his mostly white working-class base.
The interview offered a few hints, but left the question up in the air. The mayor reiterated the basic point that he thought it was time for him to leave City Hall. But when asked if he would resign, he responded: “Of course not. I think that’s a very private decision that should be made by myself and my family. I have not made a decision, as a family, to leave this office.”
Tory could not be reached for comment. We’ll have more when it becomes clear what his plans are.
