It was only in January of this year that we found out about Tatiana Calderon, the 25-year-old Texan woman who was chosen by Williams and Honda as their first female driver for next year. It’s an impressive achievement for a woman who has never set foot on a Formula 1 track, and on what promises to be an exciting year ahead for Calderon. We caught up with her before heading to Spain to discuss her career, fashion sense and the life of a F1 driver.

Happiest moment of your life?

I loved going for a walk with my mother on the beach. It has always been a way for me to relax.

Biggest blunder?

I can’t remember one. And I don’t think I’d be proud of it.

But you’ve made a few decisions that have been correct ones.

I wish I was taller. It’s an easy one.

How does your life change after signing with Williams?

The change is what you make of it.

What does the F1 driver lifestyle entail?

Your mind plays a big part in the game. There’s a lot to do, a lot of work to do. You are travelling back and forth [from the US] more than a week at a time.

Where do you live now?

Houston, Texas. It’s been fun being at home.

What does your home life consist of?

I live with my partner; he’s in the military. We have a small house, but we’re always on the move. We tend to go between homes.

What is your current favourite room in your house?

My living room is my favourite.

Least favourite room in your house?

My kitchen. It’s really bad – probably because I enjoy having food made.

Worst habit?

I am always in my seat when driving. So when you have dinner and you want to sit down, it’s hard to switch seats.

How much time do you spend in the car compared to the rest of your life?

I spend at least four hours in the car everyday.

Do you have a favourite place in your house?

My grand piano. It sounds good.

Book that you couldn’t live without?

My notebook. I like writing.

List of world leaders you would like to meet?

Let’s see. Barack Obama. He’s the only American leader I’ve met. I’ve met others, but not yet.

People you admire most?

My family and my husband.

Rocking out

Tatiana’s formative years were spent in a wrestling background and she started on the PCX racing circuit in Texas. Her striking dark bob was a bit too much for most women, but it soon became her trademark.
