President Barack Obama is expected to convene top officials from around the world on Friday, just hours after he met one-on-one with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Hamburg, Germany, at the Group of 20 summit.
Two senior US officials told CNN that Biden will engage on Ukraine — which according to a Ukrainian government source, was the prime topic of conversation between Obama and Putin, the Russian President, who today appeared at a regular noon press conference ahead of the G20 summit.
The US and Ukraine have been in a deadlock over the terms of a political settlement for Ukraine, with the Ukrainian government unwilling to cede control over Crimea. The US official, speaking on background, said Biden will be calling for the immediate release of three Ukrainian government officials still in Russian custody.
Another US official also told CNN that Biden will be taking the case of the three Ukrainian citizens to the international community and to the European Union, and that Russia’s ambassador to the European Union was also summoned to the State Department on Thursday afternoon for a bilateral meeting.
