NPR book editor Petra Mayer has died at the age of 46.
Mayer, a former intern at the public radio outlet, is one of three journalists who have died while on assignment covering the Gulf Coast flooding.
While heavy rains from Tropical Storm Gordon plowed into Louisiana on Thursday, two other journalists covering the story, Storm Team 4 meteorologist Alex Sosnowski and a reporter from KLFY in Lafayette, La., died in separate car accidents.
Mayer had been a magazine and television contributor, having written a series on extreme skiing for Outside Magazine.
Her article “The End of it All” was in the magazine’s November 2000 issue. A profile of Mayer’s grandfather in the Philadelphia Inquirer’s August 2000 issue talked about Mayer’s grandfather’s struggle with the illness ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease.
At NPR, Mayer worked in coverage of pre-trial proceedings, disasters and immigrants.
Mayer is survived by her husband, J.W. Peterson, and two daughters.
