There was no love lost between the two since 2008, when Biden hammered Obama on an issue that would impact voters later in this election cycle.

Trump fired back, noting that the speed of Biden’s response to chemical weapons in Syria contrasted with his measured response as a senator to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Trump lamented Biden’s speedy effort and mocked him for his widely criticized comments about white privilege. “It takes him a year to figure out whether the white frickin’ privilege is a euphemism for white supremacist privilege. Do you realize what an incompetent coward that guy is?” Trump said.

But it wasn’t just the insults that drove Biden’s supporters to the Democratic side Thursday. Trump opened the White House’s day-long opioid summit by claiming that the nation is in the middle of the “greatest health crisis in the history of our country.”

CNN’s Kate Bolduan said in response that Biden had “paved the way for this White House to embrace this issue and make it an agenda item.”

A Pew Research Center analysis of campaign fundraising found that, between Sept. 27 and Nov. 25, 2017, Biden raised $13.2 million — more than any other Democratic candidate. This momentum has carried over to the early days of 2018, with nearly all of the top Senate Democrats and all but a handful of House Democratic candidates having received more than $50,000 from Biden.

Biden, according to an analysis by Bloomberg Politics, has written checks to more than two dozen candidates and nonprofit groups since this time last year.

This morning, Trump continued to break with Biden and what he sees as moderate Democrats who aided the opposition during last year’s bitter campaign.

Trump tweeted that Biden was soft on illegal immigration and carried water for open borders. Trump also criticized Biden for his support of Hillary Clinton.

Trump didn’t mention Biden by name but tagged another Democratic, former Gov. Martin O’Malley of Maryland, who is also eyeing a 2020 bid.
