Winter, star of Dolphin Tale, dies aged three

Winter, the young dolphin who starred in the acclaimed film Dolphin Tale, died on Friday, the Tampa-based Clearwater Marine Aquarium said.

Winter, believed to be three years old, had been in and out of hospital after becoming ill earlier this year. She had been undergoing a series of operations, including surgery to remove a spinal tumor and surgery to treat a virus.

“Winter was just a gift,” said a staff member, Becky Bishop, on the aquarium’s Facebook page. “She touched the hearts of everyone here at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and a big part of us will never be the same.”

In 2012, Winter was captured off Georgia and shipped to the aquarium after she suffered burns and other injuries following a gasoline spill in 2007, which killed her mother and other dolphin calves.

Movies including Braveheart, Man on Fire and Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book have been inspired by her story, but her attitude and cheerful disposition also made her one of the dolphins most loved by visitors.
