Meet Perth Council's secret advisers

Perth Council a powerless body of 24 councillors at arm’s length from government

These privatised council officers are acting as if their only job is to serve and support the public

Consent exemptions are granted to developments on environmental grounds so that other parts of the planning process don’t have to consider them

The state government is failing to protect the environment in urban Perth.

Among Perth Councils, the strongest opposition to the model of development comes from the urban greenfield wards of London Road, Park Road and Butler Street.

Perth City Council has the most to lose from the current approach, where it’s no longer “local government” for the public, but a collection of private contractors that serve primarily the interests of their chief executive, the Department of Planning and the local community development officer.

Council officers are acting like consultants in public service: setting out the latest strategies for change, as well as managing applications, advice, marketing, and public consultations.

The statutory officers who do prepare for the people should be planning officers, not accountants, lawyers, nurses or even architects.
