CoVag? New virus found at US hospital

(CNN) — The virus known as CoVag could prove fatal if contracted in large numbers, according to doctors.

Based on the mass outbreak at an intensive care unit (ICU) in the town of Zaragoza, Spain, this might just have happened.

Nurses and technicians at the Zaragoza and Guiria universities hospital infected and infected each other

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), CoVag is a respiratory virus whose symptoms include fever, muscle aches, tiredness and cough.

The situation had been brought under control by the hospital’s then director, Matias Ardito Salas, who issued a public apology to parents of the affected children.

Routine tests for CoVag, and for another virus, Acinetobacter baumannii, showed that the outbreak could have been caused by a respiratory virus. The virus was traced to an outbreak at a rehabilitation center in Zaragoza. The traditional party around Christmas was thought to be the likely source.

However, after investigating, the hospital found that the virus was in fact CoVag.

Some 70 ICU nurses and technicians at the hospital then tested positive for the virus, either in the bloodstream or the lungs. A few more false-positive tests later, and medical staff were finally on alert for the infection. The WHO is not ruling out the possibility that other patients could have contracted the virus.

On September 4, 31 of the 95 patients diagnosed with the virus were admitted to the hospital’s ICU. Between September 9 and 17, a further 30 patients with symptoms of CoVag were admitted, bringing the total of infected patients to 58.

Many of the infected patients may not have known that they had the virus, as it has a very low incubation period of about three days.

More than 60 patients have now been discharged. The rest are being treated in various parts of the hospital.

However, the main concern is that a vulnerable group of patients is at high risk: those with weakened immune systems.

According to the WHO, they must be particularly careful because of the risk of kidney damage if the virus is not properly managed. The effect of the virus is more severe when a person is poorly able to fight off the infection, as this means that they will be less resistant to the effects of the virus.

According to one doctor who wished to remain anonymous, the “current situation shows us that these infection control precautions, which were never implemented, are utterly inadequate.”
